Accidents can happen to anyone, anywhere at anytime. For years I secretly believed I was somehow exempt from this- that accidents happened to the people who my husband cared for in the emergency department, to families on tv maybe but definitely not to me and my family. That belief unraveled when my first son Nicholas choked one day at lunch. Suddenly I was one of those people. I stood in front of my silent and cyanotic toddler in disbelief. Luckily because of my training as a RN I knew how to give him the Heimlich Maneuver. After several tries a soft piece of potato came out of his mouth, he started coughing and I started crying. This day changed my life forever. I could never again believe that "these things" don't happen to me. When I took that thought one step further I realized these things could also happen to my babysitter or my parents, they could happen at the park, in a car or on an airplane. It became clear to me that part of loving my baby was knowing what to do during emergencies and making sure everyone who cares for him does the same.
Luke and I put together a homemade packet of emergency information that week and kept it in a satchel which hung on the door to our kitchen. My sister asked if we would make her one, friends echoed the request and the next thing we knew we were knee deep in market research to find out what resources were available for parents and caregivers. What we found was not surprising. There were tons of excellent reference materials available, some of which were on our bookshelf already. The problem we had with all of them was that we just couldn't see how they could ever effectively be used during an emergency. Whether it was that the lifesaving material was difficult to find (buried on page 342) or the books wouldn't stay open (so our hands would be free to actually give the required care) or what if the emergency didn't happen at home (that was a entirely different kind of problem), nothing worked the way we knew it needed to. Using Luke's knowledge as an emergency medicine physician, my nursing background and our joint experience as parents we created MEDBASICS.
